Three years ago, I collaborated with Norb Dunkel, associate vice president of student affairs for the University of Florida, on a potential book chapter regarding sustainable design and pedagogy in student housing. That chapter has now been published in the book, “The Sustainable University: Green Goals and New Challenges for Higher Education Leaders.”
The book recognizes that colleges and universities are at the forefront of efforts to preserve the earth’s resources for future generations while identify four of the most formidable challenges facing the leadership teams at these schools; “ institutionalizing sustainability thinking; developing an efficient, flexible system of sustainability benchmarks; implementing an accountable university budget model; and engaging boards of trustees in the campus sustainability agenda.”
Within the housing chapter Norb and I focused on:
~ Sustainable living-learning communities
~ Hands-on learning initiatives on campus
~ Sustainable pedagogies and
~ Moving towards net zero living
I’m making my way through the remaining chapters and have found it very informative. I’m humbled to have been chosen to participate with such a strong group of collaborators. I encourage those who work in design and/or higher education to give it a read.
