National Engineers Future City Competition challenges 7th and 8th grade students to create sustainable, affordable housing options for disaster victims based upon a semester-long engineering program. In the program, students design a computer model, explore engineering challenges, build a tabletop scale model, author an essay about their solution and deliver oral presentations.
Lauren Blas, a mechanical engineer in the Buffalo office, judged the regional competition in Western New York. Blas is a former competitor who participated in the program 10 years ago as a student. She told this year’s students “Future City is more than just an extracurricular activity; it’s a path to a rewarding engineering career. Middle School students are familiar with the roles of the scientists from their science classes, but the Future City Competition is often a student’s first real contact with engineering.”
