Every year I hear about AIA New York’s Fit City event and quickly become intrigued. AIA NY hosts the event during Design Week NYC in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and examines how design of the built environment can create opportunities for increasing physical activity and access to healthier food and beverages. Architects, planners, designers, landscape architects, developers and public health professionals to discuss how design, policy and practice designs can address the dominant health issues of our time: obesity and related chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and asthma.
Health and fitness and how we can design spaces to encourage it are topics that I have a strong passion and interest in discussing. It goes beyond simply ensuring that we find time to exercise for 30 minutes a day and looks at how we can make it easier for people to walk from place to place as opposed to driving. If you get a chance, take a look at the impressive list of speakers and contributors who will be taking part in Fit City 7. More importantly, take a minute to think about how you could incorporate more health and wellness in your life and community each day.
